NFPA 1710 is a group of Federal mandates that help to set standards for fire and emergency service organizations. A portion of the mandate states that all first responders must reach their desired location within four (4) minutes of receiving an emergency call for service.
Many fire departments base their response zones on 1710 compliance and measure four (4) minute response areas out from each station along the street network. This process helps determine where additional stations or apparatus may be needed. This process can also help mold emergency response methods so that they become more efficient.
