HIGH POINT — City police have rolled out a redesigned Web
site, complete with mapping software that shows people where crimes
happen in the city.
The software, a new technology called Crime View Community, is available
in only about 15 cities nationwide.
Users simply type in an address, landmark or ZIP code to access a map
detailing crimes in that area. Users can choose the size of the area
to be mapped, the types of crimes to be included and the time span.
Nicknamed "Crime on My Street," the software offers clear instructions
and the map includes a detailed legend. Clicking on an object within
the map opens an information box.
By offering the software, police hope to provide useful information
to the public as conveniently as possible, said Eleazer D. Hunt, the
department crime analyst.
Hunt said he spends much of his day answering calls about crime rates
in various neighborhoods. The software should free up some of the department's
time.
The revised Web site, launched last week, also includes contact information
for the city's neighborhood watch groups.
The department's community resource officers plan to train each neighborhood
watch captain on the software, Hunt said.
For residents without Internet access, the department will place three
kiosks in public areas across the city. One will be in the police station
lobby; the other two locations have not been determined.
Greensboro residents shouldn't expect to see their own version of the
software anytime soon. Anita McCoy , the department information technology
manager, said the department doesn't have the resources to offer it
now.
