Website keeps community informed about crime

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A new website will keep people in High Point informed about their neighborhoods.

High Point police say it creates one more place for people to get crime information.

“The website is built on a very simple basis of a what, where and when,” explained High Point Police Department Crime Analyst Eleazer Hunt. “It has three tabs. The what tab gives you a listing of crimes and you can pick any combination of those crimes or look at all of them. The where gives you the ability to select an address and you can look at 100 feet or 1000 feet or a ¼ mile around that address so you’re buffering the address and then the when is the last 365 days and you can pick any number between one and 365.”

Hunt says the website is just another step to making the data they get more accessible to the public. He says now when something happens in the community, people can get accurate information almost instantly.

“Far more efficient,” Hunt continued. “They can access it any time they want without having to call anyone. It’s there on their desktop via their internet browser.”

But it’s not just the police who are excited about the website.

“Oh I think it's a great idea,” said High Point resident Kim Caffee. “I mean I think that we all need to be aware of what's going on around us and be aware of anything that might be happening so that we can be on guard.”

Hunt added, “And I think just as the citizens are going to learn more about the crime in their neighborhood, the police officers that are utilizing the information already have learned much more about what's going on in their beat. Detectives are utilizing it much more proactively and looking at crimes they are investigating.”

If you don't have access to the internet, High Point police say they plan to put three mobile kiosks around the city, including one in the High Point Police Department.

Hunt says the department plans to train neighborhood watch captains in High Point on how to use the website. They hope those leaders will be able to use it as a tool to keep their neighborhoods safe.
